In 2004, Mel Stultz and a group of about 13 people transformed an old bowling alley into a retro-chic music venue and tiki bar. Asbury Lanes originally opened in 1962 and had been in owner Ralph Ayles’ family ever since. The Lanes became a destination for hot rod, punk, rockabilly, and surf rock afficianados.

Jenn Hampton would eventually take over management and continue to grow the burgueoning scene community at the Lanes. Burlesque performances, punk rock garage sales, movie screenings, and wedding receptions and even sex toy bingo became regular events at the bowling alley.

The Bouncing Souls adopted Asbury Lanes as their hometown hangout and the venue soon attracted new fans in the form of touring bands who found its hospitable vibes an oasis from life on the road. In only a few years, Asbury Lanes had grown from forgotten bowling alley in Asbury Park to an internationally renowned venue.

Under the constant threat of emminent domain, Asbury Lanes prospered against the odds and inspired a community of loyal followers and supporters. In 2012, Asbury Lanes was sold to new owners whose recent deal with city developers has put Asbury Lanes future in question once again.

Whatever the outcome Asbury Lanes will live on in the hearts of any kid who smoked a cig on the porch, got drunk at the bar and walked out in the Asbury night having just seen the best show of thier lives.
