Tillie 2008
Asbury Park, NJ

Original. 36"x24" museum quality 1/8" Gallery Plexi with Sintra back, aluminum brace, mounting bracket, & Certificate of Authenticity.

The smiling face of Tillie has long served as the unofficial mascot of Asbury Park. From the early 1950’s until 2004, Tillie could be found gleaming down from the walls of Palace Amusements at the southern end of Kingsley Street.

Leslie “Worth” Thomas designed and painted all Palace artwork at the commission of Palace Amusements owners, but he did not design Tillie. Asbury Park’s Tillie is homage to George C. Tilyou’s “Funny Face” that has existed at Coney Island’s Steeplechase Park in New York City since the 1890’s.

When Palace Amusements was scheduled for demolition in 2004, a group of concerned citizens formed Save Tillie and successfully fought to remove, store, & preserve the original Tillie painting as well as other Palace artifacts. City developers were held responsible for storing the materials but a 2009 report cited inadequate facilities presented a danger of destruction due to water and mold.

Plans to display Tillie and the other Place artificats inside the partially renovated Boardwalk Casino have as of yet not materialized. The original Tillie painting remains in storage but an homage to it is painted above the iconic Wonder Bar on Ocean Avenue.
